“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God’s holy nation, his very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for he call you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
“Listen you priests; this command is for you! …. Honor my name, says the Lord Almighty.” Malachi 2:1-2
Doesn’t it strike you that often we, as a ‘kingdom of priests’, fail to show the ‘goodness of God’ and fail to ‘Honor His Name’. Listen to some more of the Old Testament scriptures of Malachi, ‘The purpose of my covenant with the Levites was to bring life and peace’ and a little further on, ‘This called for reverence from them, and they greatly revered me and stood in awe of my name.’ This still speaks clearly to us now, and as the Lord Almighty said, ‘Listen to me and take it to heart.’ ‘In awe of His Name’ is how we should be living. That we know (or at least we should).
We also know that Christ brings us life and peace. Our response to His love is obedience, our response is reverence of Him. As His love and life become ours, as Christ lives in us, we ‘no longer live but Christ lives.’ Our response is to love and our lives become fruitful and full of goodness. We have gone from dark to light, from displaying self to displaying God’s goodness and His Name. All this we should know and be doing. The Lord’s words to Malachi show us what He viewed as ‘standing in awe of His Name.’ Let them not only show you what we as God’s priests should be doing but let them encourage those who are already doing them.
‘They passed on to the people all the truth they received from me.’ This should be clear as we are supposed to be reflecting all that God is and not ourselves. So we receive God’s light and reflect it so others can see. God’s truth comes through His Word as well as our lives. So we share His Good News and all His revealed truths from His Word but we do not stop there. We pass on His life through the way we live. This we can only do by ‘walking with Him’.
‘They did not lie or cheat; they walked with me, living good and righteous lives’. Walking with Godis living by faith. We believe in Christ, His death and and His resurrection and so we carry our cross, giving it all to God. Our relationship with God reflects our complete trust in Him, it shows our faith. We cannot live a holy life without God and so we cannot reflect His goodness or Honor His Name without constantly walking with Him.
So we see that we share His truth through His Word and His presence in our lives. If this is true, we will ‘turn many from lives of sin.’ These are not my words, but are straight from scripture, ‘they turned many from lives of sin.’ I know the response of some may be, ‘but I have never lead someone else to know God?’ Remember, that each of us has his/her work. Some plant and some harvest. We can be sure that as we walk with God, sharing His truth, people will be ‘turned from lives of sin.’Not everyone will accept this Good News, yes, but those that do, through God’s Grace, will become part of God’s Holy nation.
May these words further encourage you, ‘The priests’ lips should guard knowledge, and people should go to them for instruction, for the priests are the messengers of the Lord Almighty.’ Let us ‘stand in awe of His Name’ and not become one who has ‘left God’s paths’ and ’caused many to stumble into sin.’ No!, we are ‘messengers of the Lord Almighty’, a ‘kingdom of priests’ and we love to Honor Him.
