Standing in the Gap
“I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.” (Ezekiel 22:30)
“Christ’s one act of righteousness makes all people right in God’s sight and gives them life….. But because one other person obeyed God, many people will be made right in God’s sight.” (Romans 5:19)
The world is full of darkness. Or to put it another way, darkness covers the whole world today. Everywhere you turn, there is some new evil taking place. Do you not believe this to be true?
Have you ever gone through the day and not seen or heard the evil of the world? No one cares about others, only themselves. Listening to conversations, minds are crude and immoral. One man’s life is worthless as people murder for the smallest of things. ‘They actually destroy people’s lives for profit!’ Doesn’t that sound familiar?
We live in a world that loves to do wrong, that loves to walk along the slippery slopes, to dive into the mud and muck, the filth of sin that so easily controls us. My hearts bursts with shame when I think of all we do, when I think of the one we reject. The one who saves us, who spans the gap between destruction and life.
It seems we still have not learnt from our past mistakes. The bible is full of examples of the evil that men take part in. These verses in Ezekiel talk of exactly this. In fact the title is ‘The Sins of Israel’s Leaders’. Two facts stand out clearly for us to see.
In those days, God could find no one to span the gap, to rebuild the wall of righteousness. Yet we live in a time when His promises have been fulfilled. Christ stands in the gap in the wall! We see in the New Testament, that people are made right in God’s sight because of Christ. Do you want life, Christ gives it freely. Are you sick of the evil that plagues the world, Christ is righteousness.
Everything about Him is good, magnificent, holy, true, peace fulfilling and fills the gap that is missing in our lives. Do not let the darkness overwhelm you. ‘The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.’ And Christ is that light and as scripture says, ‘Christ is wisdom itself.’
This verse in Romans helps to explain what people often miss. ‘Christ’s one act of righteousness’ and because ‘one other person obeyed God’, are two phrases that magnify what was also missing in the days of Ezekiel. We as ‘Children of God’, need to span the gap. To stand in the gap in the wall and divert people from destruction. Are we not the light of the Glory of God, the salt of the earth?
We should be the leaders of today, leading others to the light, to righteousness. We ourselves are not the solution to people’s problems or the evil in the world. Christ that lives within, is what we echo in all things.
Imagine what our love, our obedience and complete submission to Jesus could (and should) bring to the world. The answer is simple, ‘Many people will be made right in God’s sight.’ Christ’s light will shine for all to see!
