“When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to it very depths…… Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters – a pathway no knew was there! You led your people along the road like a flock of sheep….” (Psalms 77:16-20)
The story of the Lord parting the Red Sea holds some amazing lessons. All the way through, the Glory of the Lord shines and displays His awesome power. Everything was to display His Glory to the Israelites, His chosen people. Today, we His children, are still being led to strengthened faith through the story of the Red Sea.
These verses in the Psalms shed some light on some of God’s lessons. Lets start where the Israelites are being led out of Egypt. ‘The Lord guided them by a pillar of cloud during day and a pillar of fire at night’. This physical display of His presence, not only showed His Glory, but acted as a guide to the Lord’s commands. Through day or night, whatever the circumstances, we have the Lord as a guide.
With His presence we will learn the right paths to take. A beautiful image is painted by the Lord to Moses. ‘Then Pharaoh will think, Those Israelites are confused. They are trapped between the wilderness and the sea!’. Let me paint a picture of how this looks. The world today is exactly the same.
We the children of God are being pursued by the devil. He wants to destroy us, to make us his slaves. Every part of our lives is surrounded by his tricks, his traps. We are pursued by our enemies, we are blocked off in front from any path of escape. Do we respond like the Israelites? Often we do, and only by the Grace of God are we able to find the hidden path before us. The response of Moses is better, where He knows the Lord will rescue His children.
Yet, you see God again teaching us. The Lord says to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!’ For our response should not only be the knowledge of the Lord coming to our rescue, but heading out in faith along the path God leads you on. Even if the path seems to hit a dead end or leads you towards danger. Trust God in faith and ‘a path will open up before you.’
Nothing can stand before the Lord. What path may seem blocked or impenetrable will tremble and quake before Him. He will lead you on His pathway through the mighty waters – a pathway no one knew was there! You may still be surrounded on either side by danger, but the pathway of the Lord is safe and secure. Do not worry about your pursuer, for the path is hidden from him. The very trap set for you will become a snare to the one who set it.
And do not worry either about what lies ahead, for you know that God will reveal the safe path as long as He is present. May we fear the Lord and put our faith in Him. May the Red Sea continue to display the mighty power of the Lord. Oh Lord, may we trust you in faith, leading us always to the pathway no one knew was there. The pathway of safety, leading to an eternal inheritance reserved for us, your children. An eternal inheritance of your presence! Amen.
