Who Do You Live For

For Whom Do You Live?

“Our purpose is to please God, not people. He is the one who examines the motive of our hearts.” (1 Thessalonians 2:4)

“He knew very well that the Jewish leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy.” (Matthew 27:18)

“And I command you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, that you obey his commands with all purity.” (1 Timothy 6:13-14)

It seems distressing to read the end of any of the gospels. There are so many people who are up to no good or simply just fail to do what’s right. The build up of our continuous sins seems to be magnified. Yet through it all, one person, Jesus Christ stands out for us. He alone provides the hope and light we need. Why does He prevail? His heart, His whole being is God’s. His only aim was to please God, to Glorify God!

First we see Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus for money. He viewed thirty pieces of silver as more valuable than Christ. Then the disciples deserted Jesus. Fearing for their lives they ran away. Peter followed, but then denied Jesus three times.

Lets not forget those who bore false witness against Jesus, eager to please the teachers of religious law. The leading priests and teachers of religious law who were eager to put Him to death. They were evil men, jealous and envious of all that Jesus stood for.

Still we are not finished! There is Pilate, the Roman governor who knew Jesus was innocent. He knew that Jesus was arrested out of envy. He was so anxious to please the crowd, he released Barabbas, a know criminal, a murderer. He washed his hands in a bowl of water, passing on the responsibility of Jesus death! As if water could make anyone clean from sin. He then further ordered Jesus to be flogged with a lead-tipped whip.

Still it continues, where the soldiers beat and mock Jesus. If that is not enough, while Jesus is being crucified, people mock and insult Him. It was not enough that the leading priests and teachers of religious law condemned Him to die, they had to humiliate Him. Even after Jesus rose from the dead, the soldiers guarding the tomb took a bribe and denied the truth. Still it continues…..

We could go on and on about the evil seen in the bible. The truth is, even today, we are the mockers that stand before the cross. Our lives would be the same, if it were not for the shining light of Jesus. Through every evil mentioned above, who stood His ground? Christ remained completely pure. He obeyed God until the end, being truthful, faithful, loving, forgiving and so much more. We never deserved that response from Christ, yet He gave us everything to the full.

His aim is to please God, just as ours should be. Let us focus on all God is, on all that Christ is. For God gave us life through Christ. Christ remained a faithful witness to all before Him and through Him we obey His commands with all purity. Our purpose is to please God, not people!
