You Will Find Rest In Christ
“…but your warriors, fully armed, must lead the other tribes across the Jordan to help them conquer their territory. Stay with them until the Lord gives rest to them as he has given rest to you, and until they, too, possess the land the Lord your God is giving them.” (Joshua 1:14-15)
This is an amazing lesson for all of us in this present day. How can we, after being given such rest not want others to experience the same rest we have? This story in the Old Testament shows God’s heart for those whom He promises rest.
Some background for the story can be found in Joshua 1. Israel was made up of 12 tribes and each was promised an inheritance of their own. Israel was God’s chosen people, and the promised land had just been entered. Two tribes, Reuben and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh had already conquered their land and been given all that God had promised. God gave them rest. A home to settle, land to grow crops, land for livestock and most importantly God’s presence in their lives. The true inheritance of Israel was God’s presence.
We are the same today, as christians our inheritance is God. Our rest is given to us only through Jesus Christ. What a privilege to know Christ, to experience all that the prophets spoke about!
Those who have found rest are like the tribes mentioned above, but what about the other tribes. The other tribes were still waiting to be given rest, to receive their inheritance. There are many christians today that have not yet found true rest. They are yet to inherit all that God has promised. They still have to conquer and overcome all the obstacles that block their path. Many have found rest in parts of their life, but still labour and struggle with other parts. Complete rest is ours through Christ as soon as we are His. Yet we often take a long time to grab hold of God’s wonderful inheritance.
Here we learn a wonderful lesson of God’s heart towards those who are waiting for that rest. Those who have received rest are called to stay and help those who are waiting to be given rest by the Lord. We who have rest need to lead the way, as Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh did. Armed for battle, we lead the way and conquer all the territory before us, always trusting God to give the victory. We are His warriors, fighting for His cause and His Name. We stay and fight until the Lord gives rest to our brothers and sisters. That is why we continue to encourage each other, fighting side by side.
Let us serve the Lord with all our heart and soul. We have rest through Christ, only when we are fully His. Let us encourage one another, building others up to receive the rest God’s has given them. May we be open to others leading us when we fall away from the same rest given to us. We live, trusting in God the Father and resting in all that He is.
